Alan Hills' Memories

Sadly, Alan passed away on the 8th March 2009. The following excellent photos have been compiled by Alan's lovely wife Suzanne.

Suzanne writes;

As promised, please find attached some photos I have scanned from Alan's collection. I have kept to the more 'traditional' photo, as many of the informal ones that Alan probably took himself are quite silly (fancy dress, guys asleep etc) and I wasn't sure if they would fit the ethos of the website. I found many of the photos in Alan's collection were already on the website - good to see that people (like Alan) have kept their wonderful memories safe. I am sorry if some of the information is a bit sketchy, however, I have had to take the information as listed on the back of photos or what is written in the album. Many thanks

Suzanne Hills

I think the lad on the left was a photog, name escapes me. The two on the right are Martin Peek and Tom Beck.

Canberra World Cruise (1974?) rugby team in Honolulu - Alan is in the red and black jersey, however, I do not know the names of the other players.

Tim Lees writes;

The picture of the rugby team was taken in February 1977 in Honolulu where, if my memory serves, we drew the match. I am back row far right. Front row from left Alan Mackenzie, Hamish Reid and far right Colin Campbell (then 1st Officer). We played a second match against HMS Tamar in Hong Kong which remarkably we won. This is also tied into the 1977 rugby team photo in the Canberra Group Photos section, I presume Alan and others were not there as they would have been watch keepers.

Island night group - not sure if it is the Canberra or Island Princess. Alan is in the back row and I know that the lady (with long blonde hair) third from the right in the front row is Joy Casaru.

Tim Lees writes;

On the Island Night dancers on the stairs of the Canberra, Front Row left is Bill Allison (Cruise Director) and beside him is Margaret Collins-Williams (now Robinson). On the right back row centre is Gerry Dyer.

Harbo adds;

Back row L-R: Richard Buckley, Peter Boyle, Alan Hills, John Rockell, Gerry Dyer and John Selwood (identified by Rocky).

Alan and Suzanne on their wedding day 3 November 1978 in Brisbane - when the Arcadia was in port.

Our wedding in Brisbane with the Arcadia personnel who were able to attend. I am not sure of all of the names. I know that Alfie Pimblett is on the far left, fourth from the left is our best man Chris Ferris (Joe 90), Igor is behind Alan and to Igor's left is Tony Davies (aka Sid Vicious), the person two from the right is Dave, the person on the far right is B.O.D. (there is an informal photo of him in Alan's album with those initials - so not sure what they mean) and the two ladies in the front were hairdressers.

Mark Proctor adds;

I can add a few more names to Alan and Suzanne's group wedding photo. Starting at the back from the left is Alfie Pimblett, Andy Mcgibbon, Geordie John the Chippy, Joe 90, Mike Eltham, Glen Cunningham, myself (Mark Proctor], Tony Davis, Fred Davis, Dave Miles, and my good friend Brendan O'Donoghue. Not sure who the girl is between Joe 90 and Suzanne but the one next to Alan is named Chrissy. Not sure of the one next to her either. It was a great day out as I remember it and I'm sure I have my own photos of that day.
