The follow couple of pictures of the Banana Boat Mail Drop off Niuafo’ou.
still have the letter I posted in Feb 1975. Part of the Narrative on
the back of the letter; Niuafo’ou is one of the outlying islands of the
Kingdom if Tonga, 400
miles from Tongatapu Island, on which Nuku’alofa the capital of Tonga
Niuafo’ou is better known by its nickname “Tin Can Island” because there is no good anchorage, at one time the regular means of mail delivery was for the ships carpenter to seal the mail in 40-pound biscuit tins and throw them overboard to be towed ashore by waiting postmen. Hence the nickname “Tin Can Island”.

Nicky – What are you doing?
Mac and passengers having dinner on the Oriana - Dinner was always a fun time.
Mac and Vicky Marshal (Homeward bound passenger). Vicky hailed from Adelaide SA and travelled to UK on the Oriana by herself, needless to say it didn’t take long for Vicky to increase her circle of friends.
Captains Cocktail party, Mac and Pamela Taylor (Outward bound passenger). We became very good friends.
Although there are many special people that made my time at sea memorable from shipmates, crew and passengers, Pam Taylor and Vicky Marshal have a special place in my heart for two reasons, they are why I loved my time at sea and they are also the reason I left.
That's a great collection Macca and I think I can safely say that having you around made it all the more special for the rest of us.
